Description
Utility is never compromised in bladesmith Korben Bloomfield’s high-performance handmade chef knives, yet his bold style and eye for design ensure each build is also a striking work of contemporary art. With the three-knife Ebony Wrought Chef’s Set, Korben elevates the very concept of sculptural culinary tools for the kitchen, presented here on a custom-made display stand. The set includes a long, aggressively profiled gyuto, a nakiri vegetable knife with compound ‘S-grind’ geometry, and a versatile utility knife—together forming a singular creation. Each blade is hand-forged at Korben’s UK workshop from house-made go-mai steel formulas: 80CRv2 high-carbon edges clad in reclaimed vintage wrought iron, divided by pure nickel to reduce carbon diffusion. His signature black protective finish lends the steel a unique resistance to corrosion while creating a mesmerizing play of color and texture, especially where it meets the wrought iron, producing an array of rainbow hues that shift with the light. The gyuto, thin with a full-distal taper along the rounded spine, offers both precision and agility, its superb convex geometry ending in a fine, razor-sharp edge and glass-thin tip. The nakiri, optimized for fast, efficient vegetable chopping, delivers effortless food release through compound bevels that slim to a hair-popping edge. Completing the trio, the 105mm utility knife, with its nearly straight edge and needle-like tip, proves indispensable for daily prep. Each handle, sculpted in Korben’s trademark, hand-filling form, is carved from rich ebony, capped with a tapering black G10 ferrule and secured by an inset domed steel pin that allows for removal when maintenance is needed. Contrasting polished bevels with forge-textured flats bearing the marks of their hand-forged origins, these blades embody both precision and soul. More than the sum of their parts, the Ebony Wrought Chef’s Set is a testament to what happens when form and function meet without compromise—a breathtaking union of performance, artistry, and timeless design.
