Description
The butterflies of the Irish countryside—Red Admirals, Painted Ladies, and their kin—are often fluttering companions to artist Erik Gullikson on his daily walks. Their extraordinarily evolved forms, from the intricate patterns stitching together wings of remarkable power to the subtle undulations engineered for effortless movement, became, in an instant, the spark for Erik’s next culinary creation. This is the Féileacán Cleaver, named for its living, soaring, life-giving muse.
An ode to the cells and nerves that form the architecture of the butterfly’s wing, multiple alloys converge into a mosaic of house-made damascus, shaped into a tall, head-turning vegetable cleaver profile. Masterfully sculpted and honed, the finished piece becomes a functional, metallic rendition of the insect’s wing: uncompromising in utility, unwavering in beauty. Separated from the cutting edge of high-performance ApexUltra tungsten-carbon steel by a vein of pure nickel, the Féileacán damascus pattern radiates outward from a central point, culminating in no fewer than seven curved endpoints—each echoing the many radii found across butterfly species. The pattern continues through the tang in heat-colored hues, another subtle tribute to Erik’s airborne inspirations.
Especially thin at the edge, weighted for smooth, confident strokes, and shaped with short, perfectly convex primary bevels for exceptional food release, this one-of-a-kind tool stands at the intersection of art and function. Completing the build is a comfortable, ergonomic handle carved from boldly dyed masur birch and capped with a sculpted zirconium collar.
A cleaver born from nature’s quiet poetry, crafted to bring that same sense of wonder to every meal.
