Description
On the Gubbeen family farm in County Cork, where Fingal Ferguson and four generations before him have raised animals and tilled fields, knife making happens alongside charcuterie, cooking, and the general rhythm of farm life. It is a good place to make things.
The blade is built from stainless steel and pure nickel layered over a core of ApexUltra tungsten-carbon steel, extending here to a full 235mm / 9.2″. The profile is Western in spirit, with a long flat section of edge toward the heel for confident chopping work, sweeping upward to a thin, pointed tip well suited to carving, slicing, and detail cuts. Relatively stiff along the rounded, tapering spine, only a small amount of lateral flexibility is present in the forward inches. Symmetrical convex bevels are ground freehand, delivering food release, strength where the geometry calls for it, and a fine, hard edge across the full length of the blade. Along the ricasso and into the tang, Fingal has left the forge texture intact, the hammer marks a visible record of how this blade came to be.
The handle pairs spalted beech with a ring of fossilized mammoth tooth, nickel silver spacers, a carbon fiber bolster, and a mosaic pin of brass, copper, and steel. All together, thoughtful and beautiful.
Fingal has been at this a long time. You can feel it.
