Description
Shaped from a special and rare piece of Damasteel high-performance stainless damascus modified at Damasteel’s request in their Swedish studio by Eatingtools artists Salem Straub and Casey Vilensky, this large, commanding bunka stands apart. To anchor the blade, maker Martin Huber begins with two exceptional pieces of fossilized mammoth tooth, flanking a thoughtfully tapered full-blade tang and separated by three layers of black and white G10.
The handle, sculpted for comfort and finished with black G10 bolsters and pins, provides confident control over the extra-large blade, which delivers an impressive 290mm / 11.4” of razor-sharp edge to the cutting board. Tall, superbly shaped convex bevels slim downward to a fine edge that balances toughness with finesse—thin enough for precise slicing, yet ready for the most demanding cuts.
Overall versatility and balance are enhanced by a full distal taper along the rounded spine, beginning around 3.2mm above the choil and slimming aggressively to 1.3mm at the midpoint, 0.8mm an inch from the tip, and finer still toward a needle-like termination. This carefully calculated taper preserves strength and rigidity through the rear of the blade for powerful chopping, while the forward half gains a degree of lateral flexibility that maintains toughness while making carving and delicate slicing effortless.
Etched and polished to a beautiful sheen, the feathered Damasteel pattern tells the story of a singular build—storied materials brought together and assembled into a one-of-a-kind tool in Martin’s workshop in northern Austria.
