Description

A blade forged by hand, clad in reclaimed vintage wrought iron. Blade flats carved and adorned with pure silver flowers and leaves, inlaid using the traditional nonome zogan technique. Weathered copper and pure silver form the handle’s habaki and seppa. A domed bamboo pin secures walnut to tang, allowing the handle to be removed when needed.

As in each creation by Silas Blacklow, the Gin No Hana Santoku exists at once as fine art and uncompromising tool. Meaning “Silver Flower,” this one-of-a-kind chef knife is honed for real work in the kitchen, its thin, hard edge of Japanese Hitachi Blue No.2 high-carbon steel resting beneath beautifully sculpted convex bevel geometry. Tough and confident along the rounded spine, the blade carries strength and authority throughout its length, culminating at a fine, needle-like tip suited to precise and delicate cuts.

The reclaimed wrought iron cladding brings with it evidence of age and prior life, while the silver blossoms seem to grow organically from its surface. Tapered front to back, resolved at every transition, the walnut handle feels natural in the hand, shaped for comfort during long prep sessions. Every material here has been chosen for both function and meaning; nothing ornamental without purpose, nothing technical without beauty.

The silver flowers do not wilt, nor do they fade. They remain suspended in steel, permanent against time, even as the blade itself gathers the subtle marks of use. In this way, Gin No Hana carries both fragility and endurance in equal measure.
