Description

A metallic pattern revealed in solid steel as though realized by the delicate brush strokes of a world-class painter. Balance and edge geometry purposefully refined like that of a surgeon’s scalpel. A singular culinary tool forged at the hands of an ABS Master Bladesmith. Each element of the Golden Ginkgo Chef is the result of MS Luiz Gustavo Gonçalves’ decade and a half of experience handcrafting cutlery for cooks.

Layered over a modified W’s pattern damascus billet, Gustavo applies an Arkansas Breeze forge-welded pattern to produce a finished blade that emanates calibrated energy and controlled power. For 252mm / 9.9″, the head-turning damascus, made in-house at Gustavo’s one-man studio in Brazil, extends from the forged integral bolster to a fine, needle-like tip. Densely packed along the edge, the layers appear to slightly unwind at the blade’s center before continuing their undulating journey with added breathing room and high contrast between the darkly etched areas and bright, nickel-rich layers. Tall and convex, the symmetrical bevels slim to an especially thin, razor-sharp edge aimed at uncompromising cutting performance. The flat spine carries the same etched finish as the blade’s upper flats, a consistent detail that runs the full length.

Where the pattern blossoms to become the integral bolster, the knife’s namesake is revealed: an art nouveau ginkgo leaf inlaid in pure 24k gold, one on each side. Gustavo’s signature runs along the blade in the same gold, a mark as considered as everything else here. Paired to gold and damascus, a sculpted piece of spalted maple burl in a Western-inspired form completes the grip, its warm, wild grain a grounding counterpoint to the blade’s precision.

Steel this alive deserves a kitchen that rises to meet it.
