Description
In a size and profile to reach for daily, whether cooking for one or feeding a village, this handmade petty chef knife by Ireland’s Fingal Ferguson is art and tool in one. Forged at Fingal’s shop on the Gubbeen farm, a homemade go-mai, five-layer steel formula combines carbon damascus cladding over a core of ApexUltra tungsten-carbon alloy, separated by a bright vein of pure nickel. The result is a hard-use tool that doesn’t sacrifice style. It’s built on it.
Tall, subtly convex symmetrical bevels slim downward from the rounded spine to a thin, hard, and very sharp edge. Tapering distally from tang to tip, the spine maintains strength where it is needed, culminating at a fine, needle-like tip suited to detail work and precision slicing. A matte forced-patina finish graces the bevels while hammer marks remain along the flat section and tang above, telling the story of the object’s hand-forged origins.
The handle is ergonomic and beautiful, combining Eastern sensibilities of symmetry and simplicity with Western-inspired curves. Striking rosewood is capped with a carbon fiber bolster, its flowing grain like running water. Between them sits a ring of Fingal’s own composite, fossilized mammoth tooth combined with metal dust and resin, flanked by nickel silver. At the rear, a mosaic pin stops the eye cold.
The mammoth was here before us. The knife will be here after.
