Description

As 2025 draws to a close, the second of two Shoichi Hashimoto Tobikumo offerings is at hand—his evocative twisted damascus pattern named for “bouncing clouds”—in a one-of-a-kind blade that explores the motif through a quieter, more elemental lens. Designed and hand-forged in Hiroshima, the blade is formed from Shoichi’s complex six-alloy steel formula, brought together in a finished pattern that captures the rhythm of layered skies in motion.

The distinctive striations within Tobikumo (跳雲) damascus recall clouds passing overhead at measured intervals, their movement frozen in steel. To achieve the final 4,570 layers, the six alloys begin as three separate laminated components—each composed of five, five, and four alloys respectively—before being carefully consolidated into the billet from which the blade is shaped. Measuring 240mm / 9.4” in length and 52mm at the heel, the knife features Shoichi’s masterfully formed convex bevel geometry and a thin, hard, razor-sharp zero edge, created with singular focus on cutting performance. Final polishing and sharpening are entrusted to Shoichi’s colleague, edge specialist Mr. Takahashi.

Purposefully shaped and dynamically balanced, the blade remains stiff and confident through its length, aided by a full distal taper that steadily refines the spine toward a fine, pointed tip. This geometry gives the forward portion of the blade exceptional control for precise slicing and detail work, while maintaining authority and stability where power is required.

Anchoring the blade is a striking handle sculpted from richly figured ironwood, its dense grain offering warmth and contrast to the cool complexity of the steel. At the junction, a custom bolster of copper and silver introduces a subtle saffron-inspired palette—an interplay of golden warmth and quiet luminosity that echoes both spice and sky. Shaped in a traditional octagonal wa profile, the handle provides comfort, balance, and a sense of grounded elegance, allowing the blade’s visual energy to remain the focal point.

Versatile, balanced, and deeply considered, this Tobikumo stands as both refined cutting instrument and singular work of contemporary craft—an expression of Shoichi Hashimoto’s ability to translate natural phenomena into steel, and to do so with restraint, intention, and lasting presence.
