Description
A mind-bending mosaic of metallic patterns forged from iron, pulled toward a singularity, the event horizon separating this side from the other side. Conjured by the mind of artist Nick Anger and formed element by element at his hands in Vermont’s north, the Event Horizon Chef is unlike any before it. As the blade’s compound geometry transitions from hollow to convex, so too does the calm of the damascus pattern at the edge, dense with intertwined alloys undulating in two strands from heel to tip, give way to the chaotic, energized montage of steel above, as though a force greater than the mind can imagine has tugged at it unforgivingly. Taken to a high polish, the surfaces shine as light reflects, the smooth hand-sanded faces together with Nick’s versatile workhorse geometry ensuring the blade moves through ingredients without friction. Pronounced nearest the 65mm heel, the compound portion of the bevels tapers steadily to produce a strong, robust forward section, balanced by the spine’s full distal taper. The result is both toughness and dexterity throughout a blade that flexes nicely while delivering the height and power to become the chef’s hard-use cutting tool.
Sculpted into a tapering, faceted form, the integral forged bolster presents the damascus’s multiple high-carbon alloys in ways that morph from top to sides to bottom. Completing the grip is a frame of spalted tamarind around which the fingers wrap, containing a singular dark purple inlay: the likely source of the immeasurable energy tugging at the steel in its orbit. A ring of black micarta, like the ring of time through which all must eventually pass, separates damascus from wood.
