Description
In Elmira, NY, where craftsman Silas Blacklow creates extraordinary objects of functional art inspired by the natural world, the Earth’s surface spins at approximately 732 miles per hour around its axis. To each botanical wonder, as to us, the sun appears to rise and set, its rhythm shifting with the seasons. Every living organism responds in its own remarkable way. The Morning-to-Midnight Chef Knife is Silas’ homage to that genius of nature, of evolution, and of the beings that inhabit our shared home. From elemental iron and alloys, Silas forges a damascus steel blade and integral bolster. The bolster itself then becomes Silas’ canvas: carved in relief, textured, and inlaid with fine silver, the left face represents morning, an iris gilded with 24k gold blossoms, revealing its stamen and pistil as the flower greets the day’s first rays of sunlight. At the top face, behind the blade’s spine and under a silver noonday sun, a leaf curls to protect itself from the intensity of our nearest star. As our rapid, circular movement continues and the day begins to fade, the sun nearing the horizon, a gold and silver orchid begins the process of nyctinasty to conserve resources and protect pollen from dew. Finally, the day has passed and under the silver midnight moon on the bolster’s bottom face a luminous mushroom rises from its hidden, underground mycelial network. From beyond this remarkable scene, for balance and control, a sculpted rosewood handle is secured with a hand-peened 999 fine silver pin, complementing the rounded spine and razor-sharp 182mm / 7.2” edge. Versatile, graceful, and strikingly sharp, this knife is as capable in the kitchen as it is mesmerizing to behold. The Morning-to-Midnight Chef Knife is not only a culinary tool but a meditation on the beauty of life’s cycles — a reminder, with every use, of the poetry written in nature’s daily rhythm.
