Description

When chaos ensues, a grounding of energy is needed. Enter bladesmith and visionary artist Erik Gullikson. Meaning something akin to “chaotic state” in Irish, the Trí Chéile Gyuto takes its name from the blade’s stunning multi-alloy damascus cladding—an intricate fusion of more than five alloys sourced from off-cuts, along with pure nickel and powder steel that form an “organic river” of their own. Compiled into a single billet and then twisted along its axis, the resulting damascus pattern intensifies in complexity as the eye moves from the more restrained swirling near the handle to the unruly, electrifying aesthetic that reaches the tip.

The 245mm / 9.6” blade’s refined convex geometry—formed in damascus-clad san mai construction over an ApexUltra tungsten–carbon core—allows for a relatively thin cladding layer, further revealing the full range of patterns throughout its length and height. Nimble yet steady, weighted yet responsive, the knife balances beautifully with its center of mass approximately an inch and a half ahead of the 60mm-tall heel, giving it the confident feel of a daily workhorse across tasks large and small. Especially thin along the edge, the symmetrical convex bevels provide both mass and versatility, while the spine’s pronounced full-distal taper equips the blade for every form of prep. At its culmination, a razor-thin tip sits low in relation to the handle—perfect for precision slicing and delicate detail work.

To guide Erik’s remarkable blade is a handle that begins with a sculpted black G10 collar for a supremely comfortable pinch grip. The remainder of the grip is fashioned from shredded hemp wood, its tapering, shield-style wa form revealing a kaleidoscope of hues—from greens to grays to radiant golds—echoing the blade’s controlled chaos.

A striking convergence of energy, craft, and intention, the Trí Chéile Gyuto is a tool that anchors the hand even as it ignites the imagination.
